Our view: if you are a fresh graduate, chase the strongest general MBA you can get into, then add AI and analytics skills through electives and projects. An AI-named programme is worth a look if you already work in data or technology and the eligibility fits.
Disclosure: we run Karwa’s Dakshita Academy and benefit from enrolments. This post is opinion, and we label it so.
What’s happening
As reported, eight IIMs list AI, analytics or data science programmes for the 2027-29 intake. Some are for working professionals. IIM Ahmedabad’s BPGP: BA and AI asks for three years of experience. Read the full list.
Our view
- A name is not a skill. What you can do after the programme is what matters.
- A general MBA keeps options open. Consulting, finance and general management still lead the placement story at the top school we looked at.
- You can add AI literacy anywhere. Electives, projects, internships and self-study work.
- Check eligibility first. Several of these programmes may not be open to you.
A test to run on yourself
| If you… | Then… |
|---|---|
| Have 3+ years in data or tech and want to lead AI teams | Look closely at the AI programmes |
| Are a fresh graduate unsure of your path | Aim for a strong general MBA |
| Want a specific analytics career | Look at analytics-focused programmes, and check the curriculum |
What we don’t know
We do not know how these new programmes will perform in placements. The placement report we read does not describe an AI hiring trend. We will update this post as data comes in.
Where this doesn’t apply
This is our opinion, not a fact. If you already have a clear technical path, the answer may be different. We have no placement data for the new programmes and make no claim about outcomes.
